Five Colour Princesses Revival Festival

Five Colour Princesses Revival FestivalThere is a sad legend behind Goshikihama. This is the legend that during the old period of Heian, the five princesses of the Heike clan, which was defeated at the Battle of Yadori, drifted ashore at this bay. Despairing of the world, they threw themselves into the sea and turned into five differently coloured stones.
Based on this legend, on the fourth Monday of March, the revival festival of the five colour princesses is held. On this day it comes to life with a parade of the five colour princesses and women's portable shrines.
There is also a photo contest.

"Mount Tagami's Start of the Second Month"

Mount Tagami's Start of the Second MonthEvery year, the first day of the second month of the old lunar calendar was called "Mount Tagami's Start of the Second Month" ("Tagami-san no Nigatsu Hairi") and was the green day of Houshuji Temple. Recently, with the modern calendar, it was set as first Monday in March and is now also called "the start of March" ("Sangatsu Hairi").
On this day is held a great Buddhist memorial service to pray for a bumper crop, and various events are held. Many worshippers assemble, from the surrounds of course, but also from further distances; it is a very lively day on the mountain.

Flower FestivalA fun event in which you can come into contact with flowers and greenery.
There is an on-the-spot sale of flowers, trees, and garden trees as well as an exhibition of ikebana, bonsai and various types of bazaars; you can enjoy a brilliant visit from Spring in Iyo city.

Bountiful Fishing Festival

Bountiful Fishing FestivalOn 5 May each year, successful fishing is prayed for and over a hundred fishing boats fly large fishing flags and a parade is held, in a festival of the spirit of the sea.

Terraced Rice Field Village – Urushi Plum Festival

Terraced Rice Field Village – Urushi Plum FestivalThis is a plum festival which takes place every year in March in Urushi district. There is a bazaar and local products festival, and in any one year many people visit and enjoy a breath of Spring.
Please savour the blossoms of around six thousand plum trees.

Sea Breeze Walk and Flower Convention

Sea Breeze Walk and Flower ConventionWhile looking at the rapeseed blossoms, which look like a carpet of yellow and gold, the gentle sun falls on one's back, and you can walk from Futami Seaside Park to Nagahama town along the "rapeseed blossom road". During the walk you can feel the warm hospitality of the people of the area and also soothe your mind.

Swimming Pool Opening

Swimming Pool OpeningAt the beginning of July, there is the opening of Goshikihime Seaside Park and pool openings including that of the Ehime Welfare, Pensions and Holidays Centre's jumbo pool; the height of summer has finally arrived.

Sumiyoshi Festival

Sumiyoshi FestivalEvery year on the two days of 28th and 29th July, joined with the Sumiyoshi Shrine summer festival at Goshikihama, there is the grand opening of the Sumiyoshi festival.
On 28th, combined with the "Iyo odori" (Iyo dance), there is a parade in which two thousand city citizens dance along the main shopping street. On 19th there are various events, with Goshikihama Park at the centre, and at night a fireworks display in the harbour marks the climax.

Karakawa Festival

Karakawa FestivalThis is an event to celebrate the harvest of the speciality product, the Karakawa loquat, and involves an enjoyable exchange between producers and consumers.
It takes place on Sunday between the last ten days of June and first ten days of July and there is loquat tasting, direct sales, the sale of loquat leaf tea, as well as the unique "international loquat variety sales rally" and all sorts of games. The valley is bustling all day long.

Goshikihime Seaside Park Summer Festival

Goshikihime Seaside Park Summer FestivalIn the last ten days of July, the "Summer Festival" takes place at Goshikihime Seaside Park, a popular spot with a spread of beautiful white sandy beach over which hangs a southern mood. There is a beach volleyball festival, low-tide scavenging, fishing tournament, as well as a lottery to look forward to, and the cheers of young people and families fly about all day long.

NAKAYAMA

Iyo Nakayama Firefly Festival

Iyo Nakayama Firefly FestivalThis was created in 1986 with members of the "Iyo Nakayama Firefly Preservation Society" in the central role, to measure the protection of the natural environment, and in an attempt to boost firefly numbers.
Today, the Nakayama Activation and Promotion Committee plays the central part, it takes place on the sports ground at Nakayama High School and several thousand people visit. It is a festival at which one can enjoy local entertainment and music shows. Iyo Nakayama Firefly FestivalThere is also a night market run by various groups, and you can taste delicious local foods.
Furthermore, in the area around the nearby river and at various places within the town one can enjoy the sight of fireflies flitting about in their natural environment.
Period for appreciating fireflies: Last 10 days of May to mid-June, 8-10pm

Nakayama Summer Festival

Nakayama Summer FestivalNakayama district promotional festival. The district is decorated with Japanese lanterns and bunting and items made using local products are displayed.
From Saturday evening there are Nakayama marching songs and dance by various groups, which parade through the streets. The town is filled with tightly-packed crowds and many food stalls, and is dominated by the festival.
(In the event of rain, the event will be cancelled. Or, depending on the schedule, the opening time may be changed.)

"Hotaru no Sato Futami" Firefly Festival

Hotaru no Sato Futami Firefly FestivalThis event is held to aim for the creation of an environment in which fireflies can live harmoniously. The rich colours of the bazaar stalls of the local autonomous community centre, among others, make it a happy event. Observing fireflies attracted to the lantern in one's hand as part of a "lantern line", the fantastic atmosphere leaves a lasting impression.

The Opening of the Coast / Japanese Arrow Festival

The Opening of the Coast / Japanese Arrow FestivalGo back in time eight hundred years! The "Japanese Arrow Festival", which is part of "the opening of the Futami coast", announces the arrival of Futami's summer. Members of high school Kyudo clubs attempt "Ougi otoshi", bringing to mind Nasuno Yoichi of the Genpei Wars.

Shimonada Harbour Festival

Shimonada Harbour FestivalThe fishing market of Toyota fishing port in Shimonada district is opened up and there is an exchange between the city and farming and fishing villages, and between town inhabitants and those from outside. Out of the many popular events, the "amateur auction market", in which anyone can take part and search for fresh fish at a reduced price, is particularly well-known.

Futami Summer Festival

Futami Summer FestivalThis is a festival in which one can experience the sea, the lifeblood of Futami. Of the numerous water-based events, the "fish catching by hand", which is know as an event in which you can catch the magnificent bonito, is very popular.

Sunset Music Festival

Sunset Music FestivalThis is a music festival which takes place on Koibito Point, where there is a backdrop of the sea and the setting sun, and the smell of the sea. The audience act as judges and decide who performs at the Sunset Platform Concert. This is a music festival at which the audience and musicians are closest to each other.

AUTUMN

IYO

Autumn Festival

Autumn FestivalEvery year on the 15 and 16 October is the local festival. Portable shrines are brought out from each shrine, including Iyo Inari Shrine and Iyo Hachimangu Shrine, and local entertainment, a lion dance, is performed at various places within the city.

Goshikihama Imotaki

Goshikihama ImotakiOne of the things Iyo city is renowned for in autumn is the "imotaki" at Goshikihama. "Imotaki" is where potatoes ("imo"), vegetables and so on are put into chicken soup and made into stew in a pot; many people sit around cooking pots on the beach in an enjoyable party. Particularly at sunset and during the period of the harvest moon, the mood is great and it is very popular.

Citizens' Health Festival

Citizens' Health FestivalThere is a health plaza with health consultation, a "wanpaku land" where parents and children can have fun, a fire prevention corner etc. It is an event where one can bring the family along and increase one's knowledge of how to be healthy while having fun at the same time.

NAKAYAMA

Nakayama Chestnut Festival

Nakayama Chestnut FestivalTo boost awareness of Nakayama's speciality of chestnuts, through exchange between the city and farming villages, linked to attempts to enliven the area, this festival is held around the open-air music plaza.
In the assembly area, there is chestnut-picking and chestnut de-shelling race as well as a lucky dip and gifts of chestnuts in their shells. Aside from this, a chestnut quality judging contest takes place and there is an auction of prize-winning chestnuts. There is a local gathering based on different groups within the city, one can taste chestnut sushi and there is also a tasting of boiled chestnuts. At the end of the festival there is a chestnut and "mochi" (Japanese rice cake) throwing gathering, and there are many activities which one can enjoy.
You can take thorough pleasure in an autumn day in a Nakayama filled with nature.

Nakayama Chestnut Long-distance Relay Race (Ekiden)

In 2004 the eleventh Nakayama chestnut long-distance relay race used Nakayama High School's sports ground as the assembly point and groups and teams from various places within the prefecture as well as local elementary and junior high school teams participated; good runners compete. As all runners pass their sashes onto the next runner at the high school sports ground, people that come to watch can see the hard running of the competitors. Why don't you come along in the late autumn and enjoy supporting the runners?

Sunset Platform Concert

Sunset Platform ConcertThis is a concert on a train platform which one looks down upon from above, with the Seto Inland Sea below. One great panorama of nature is of the setting sun as it changes moment by moment and meets brilliantly with the fresh music in a way which permanently captures viewers' hearts.

Autumn Festival

Autumn FestivalThis is an autumn festival which gives thanks for a good autumn harvest and for a year of peace. The town overflows with the passions of the young who, while carrying portable shrines, let out good, spirited voices. In 1985, the Ryotani district lion dance was restarted after forty years and adds spice to the festival.

Futami Cultural Festival

Futami Cultural FestivalMany autonomous activities take place in this separate cultural festival which is organized by the independent community centre. There is not only an exhibition of various cultural pieces, but also a bazaar, study lecture and performing arts. It is held simultaneously at the two assembly areas of Kaminada and Shimonada.

Futami "Gyu no Hachi" Paragliding Tournament

Futami Gyu no Hachi Paragliding TournamentWhen the weekend begins, paragliders of various colours drop from Reihougyu peak and dance in the sky above Futami. In November, lovers of paragliding, including many from outside the prefecture, gather, and a paragliding tournament takes place.

Seaside Beginning of Spring Daffodil FestivalThis is an event which takes place every year in the middle of January. The daffodil announces the coming of spring.
The appearance and faint scent of the daffodils grown by the Futami Flower Club, a club which is enchanted with the daffodils that grow naturally at various places around Futami, foresees the coming of spring, which is only one step away.
